The heat from the water felt good against her skin. So much so that she barely resisted the urge to plunge completely into the bath, allowing the water to swallow her whole. Draven’s warning about the saffron still marking her cheeks was all that stopped her. If only because she most definitely did not wish to be caught in another courting . . . mating game. Not because she wished to please the annoying creature appointed to be her Keeper.

Yvette rose from the carved bench and splashed across the large bath toward the basket with all the vials. Standing, the water did not quite reach her ribs so she was grateful for the clouds of steam that prevented the air from being too cool against her wet skin. She could smell the faintest hints of sulfur in the steam, so small that she felt certain anyone not a dragon or some other type of shifter would be unlikely to notice, but it confirmed her own theory that the water was heated from a natural hot springs rather than by a complicated system of pipes and furnaces as were used in the bath houses of Belfarad and Cian Gwenith, particularly in their capitals of Ebura and Eryri.

Reaching the edge of the bath, she reached out to pluck a vial from the basket. Water dripped from her fingertips as she pulled the stopper free and sniffed. Lavender. She grimaced and immediately sealed the vial before setting it back down in the basket with more gentleness than she would have thought possible. The scent of purple flowers was something Pratima had favored. Another vial smelled of violets. That too she barely resisted shattering against the wall as she fought back the memories threatening to drown her. Finally, she found the spicy scent of dragon’s heart, the red flower native to Belfarad. She inhaled deeply, closing her eyes as she did so, then poured it into the waters of the bath.

This was a scent she loved. It had been a favorite of her mother’s, and she had almost spent a full fortnight in Belfarad simply because she found a meadow filled with the red flowers. Placing the vial next to the basket, she rummaged through the soaps as she sniffed each one until she found another scented with the spicy perfume.

By the time she finished scrubbing, she was almost certain the scent of dragon’s heart had sunk into her skin. She sat once more on the low carved bench, sinking into the water until it lapped at the underside of her chin with a tiny smile on her lips as she inhaled the comforting spice. She loved it. Hopefully, Draven would also—

Yvette’s smile vanished as she opened her eyes. What was she thinking? Draven’s opinion on the perfumes she chose for herself would be neither invited nor welcomed! She shifted, bracing her hands against the bench as she raised her leg until her toes peeped above the waters. She scowled at them and then wiggled them before bringing her leg down once more.
